With the guidance of UXi International Rugby Institutes, aspiring athletes can elevate their game and aim for the top tier of university rugby.

Unlocking the Game: Point Scoring System and Bonus Points

To eXcel in varsity rugby, one must first grasp the point scoring system. Understanding the nuances of scoring tries, conversions, penalties, and drop goals is essential. However, in the fast-paced environment of varsity rugby, bonus points can often be the differentiator between victory and defeat.

In both the FNB Varsity Cup and Varsity Shield, teams have the opportunity to secure bonus points by meeting specific criteria during matches. For instance, scoring four or more tries in a game can earn a team a bonus point, encouraging an attacking mindset and dynamic gameplay. Additionally, losing by seven points or less grants a losing bonus point, incentivizing teams to fight until the final whistle.

These cup competitions not only provide a platform for players to showcase their skills but also offer invaluable exposure to high-level competition. Step into the inspiring world of Barend Janse van Rensburg, second year student-athlete at the UXi Cheetahs Institute of Excellence, and a true rugby prodigy whose journey has been nothing short of incredible! Here’s a glimpse into his rugby journey with us at UXi Sport:

From the tender age of 6, Barend’s heart was set on rugby. His journey at UXi CIE is a testament to pure passion and dedication. From grueling gym sessions to epic showdowns in Stellenbosch, every moment has shaped his formidable character.

A shift in mindset marked Barend’s first game major for UXi CIE, sparking a season that challenged him to bridge the gap between school and being selected to play for Free State amateur rugby. His discipline to push beyond limits, coupled with unwavering support from coaches like Gerhard, Simon, Tebogo, Liv, and Steven, crafted his path to success.

His key takeaways? Resilience, massive work ethic, and the ability to prioritize long-term goals. Rugby not only honed his skills on the field but also imparted life lessons: the irreplaceability of hard work and the realization that victory isn’t always guaranteed.

Looking forward, Barend eyes a professional rugby contract, with dreams of coaching in the future. To those aspiring to walk a similar path, he says, “Stay humble, absorb knowledge, and push beyond the ordinary.” His legacy that he wants to leave behind at the UXi Cheetahs Institute of Excellence is that Hard work, undeterred by time, will always set you apart.

We are immensely proud of how far Barend has come in his journey and we wish him only the best of luck for his future. May it hold many more amazing opportunities!

From facing childhood challenges to chasing rugby dreams, Juandre le Roux’s journey is nothing short of inspiring. Here’s a glimpse into his rugby story:

In the world of rugby, few stories shine as brightly as Juandre le Roux’s remarkable journey. His love affair with the sport began in grade 1, a young boy with big dreams and an unyielding spirit. Despite facing early challenges and relentless doubt from others, Juandre’s heart was set on rugby.

The turning point arrived in grade 4 when he decided to overhaul his eating habits and commit to rigorous training. It was a daunting endeavour, but Juandre’s determination knew no bounds. By grade 5, he had earned a coveted spot on the first team, but critics still lingered. It was the unwavering support of Coach Karemaker that bolstered his resolve.

A life-altering moment arrived when Coach Karemaker extended an invitation to Juandre to attend the Diamandveld High School rugby camp. From that moment, his path in rugby began to take shape. Throughout his high school years, Coach Karemaker remained a constant source of motivation, pushing Juandre to reach new heights.

Rugby inspiration struck in the form of Ox Nche, a player who had overcome adversity and risen to represent the green and gold. At UXi, Juandre forged enduring friendships that would serve as a wellspring of inspiration both on and off the field.

The Cheetahs U/19 tournament marked Juandre’s entry into competitive rugby, followed by a transformative eXperience tour with UXi Cheetahs Institute of Excellence. Playing through a painful pulled rib muscle, he learned the invaluable lesson of resilience. Under the guidance of CIE’s coaches, Juandre honed his skills and pushed his limits. Challenges and setbacks were woven into the fabric of his journey, but his indomitable spirit prevailed.

Throughout this remarkable journey, Juandre’s parents stood by his side, their sacrifices serving as the bedrock of his determination. Coach Simon Askew emerged as a pivotal figure, offering guidance and support during the toughest times.

The fundamental attribute of a successful rugby player, Juandre believes, is an unwavering commitment to never giving up, an unrelenting work ethic, and the willingness to learn from coaches and mentors. Beyond the sport, rugby instilled in Juandre a sense of discipline, respect, and an unyielding work ethic. It became more than a game; it became a way of life.

Looking ahead, Juandre’s sights are set on securing a senior rugby contract, for he cannot fathom a life without the sport he loves. His advice for aspiring players: Embrace coachability, dedicate yourself to hard work, and transform negativity into motivation. Believe in your capabilities, and success will inevitably follow.

To the future generation of CIE student-athletes, Juandre imparts this wisdom: Trust in your coaches and the system, for greatness awaits those who give their all.”

Thanks to UXi CIE, Juandre has amassed memories and opportunities that have moulded his rugby journey into the extraordinary tale it is today. Gratitude abounds for this unforgettable ride!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

12 April 2023 – The Blue Bulls Rugby Union and UXi Sports International Rugby Institutes are excited to announce their partnership in creating the Cross-Border U20 Club Competition. The competition features 21 teams in three sections including North, South, and Central regions from the Blue Bulls, Cheetahs, Pumas, Griquas, Valke, Leopards, and Western Province Rugby Unions.

The competition officially gets underway on 14 April with only the North Section teams in action, the following day it will be the South Section sides while the Central region will have its first match on 15 April. The final will be contested on 30 Sept following the quarter- and semi-finals being played on 16 and 23 Sept, respectively.

“At the BBRU (Blue Bulls Rugby Union) one of our strategic goals is to make club rugby relevant again,” said Willem Strauss, President of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union. “Research has shown that up to 93 percent (%) of rugby players stop playing when they have left school. “We hope that this competition will encourage more school leavers to join their local clubs and academies and that it will also be a pathway to provincial and even professional rugby for both players and coaches. The Cross-Border U20 Club Competition is an important addition to the rugby calendar. This competition will give our young club players the opportunity and platform to showcase their skills and talent.”

The sponsorship agreement allows for a hosting fee of R 50 000 for each participating club and R500 000 in prize money for the top-performing teams.

Strauss continues: “Without sponsors no competition is possible. We are delighted that the partnership with UXi Sport is making this tournament possible. I would like to thank UXi Sport for their involvement in the competition. The hope is that through the involvement of UXi Sport we can grow U20 club rugby in South Africa. The investment by UXI Sport in the young rugby talent of South Africa is massive and will contribute to growing the game at the U20 level. This tournament is aimed at growing the game at community level by creating opportunities for late bloomers and non-contracted junior players in South Africa.”

“We are thrilled to be part of this exciting new tournament,” Thea Miller, COO of UXi Sport, said. “Our aim is to create opportunities for young rugby players to develop their skills and fulfill their potential. The Cross-Border U20 Club Competition is a fantastic initiative that will enable us to do just that. Through this initiative, we support our local communities, who have been the backbone of club rugby talent, spectator support, and instrumental in the sports economy of South Africa.

“We dedicate this competition to every rugby player, especially those in the academy systems across the country, who has dreams and ambitions but are limited by not being afforded opportunities after school. My dream is that all Provincial Unions become part of this initiative.”

Some of these matches will be live-streamed on the SuperSport Schools, more details on this will follow soon.
